New Free Travel Pass - Scooter and Wheelchair Travel Pass

New free travel pass now available for users of a Scooter or a Wheelchair. The Scooter and Wheelchair Travel Pass has been introduced to support independent travel for people who are dependent on scooters & wheelchairs.

The new free travel pass is administered by the Metlink Central Pass Office and more information is available on the Metlink website via this link:

Vulnerable people increased supports in emergency management

The Commission finds it particularly worrying that nearly half of the people who died were classed as ‘vulnerable’ because they were aged less than 12 years or more than 70 years or because they were suffering from an acute or chronic illness or disability” [Executive summary, pg 5]

‘Increased supports for vulnerable people at all stages of emergencies are a positive step forward in ensuring safer, more resilient communities’ says Steve Peuschel, CEO Action For Community Living, on reading the 2009 Victorian Bushfire Royal Commission report. Steve lives in a bushfire prone area with a young family with disability and chronic health conditions.

Announcement - Government to establish a National Leadership Program

The Gillard Labor Government announced on Saturday 24th July, three new initiatives to support people with disability and their carers to participate in community life.

One of the initiatives is:
Leaders for Tomorrow - A new national program to help people with disability to become leaders in business, the community and government through mentoring and leadership development. The new $3 million program will provide 12-month intensive leadership support for up to 200 people with disability, including matching them a mentor in their field of interest.

Airlines Struggle to Get Disability Access Right

Another bad news story about the treatment of people with disabilities on Australian airlines makes us all wonder what it will take for the message to get through to all levels of operations in the airline industry.  The failure to provide the agreed "meet and assist" support as identified on the booking for a woman who is deaf and mute highlights the need for more comprehensive training and better management of all passengers who require appropriate accommodations in relation to a disability.
